A Woman's Perspective on Panama Investment

A Woman's Perspective on Panama Investment

When Ashley Luther first flew into Panama City, she expected a developing Central American capital. What she found completely changed her perspective.

"We could see this huge city and these skyscrapers from the airplane," Ashley recalls. "It was expansive and impressive. It almost looked like a small Miami. Steve and I were not expecting to be so impressed."

Beyond First Impressions

Ashley dug deeper than impressive skylines, exploring neighborhoods, testing services, and experiencing the lifestyle that attracts rental tenants and expat buyers.

Her favorite discovery? Casco Viejo.

"Casco has my heart, truly. From the minute you walk in, you have these beautiful cobblestone streets, old Spanish architecture, buildings that are hundreds of years old, churches on plazas with gazebos and charm."

But Casco Viejo isn't just pretty. It's functional: world-class dining, boutique shopping, authentic cultural experiences. Ashley discovered a linen shop she returns to repeatedly. The cafes serve coffee that converted her from a lifelong tea drinker.

The Geographic Diversity Surprise

Panama's remarkable diversity within small country impressed Ashley:

"You could go golfing and shopping and hiking in a rainforest, hiking a mountain, get a spa treatment and have wonderful dinner all in one day because the landscape and offerings are so diverse."

She's explored Pacific beaches, Caribbean coast, mountain regions like Boquete, and cosmopolitan Panama City. Each offers different investment profiles and lifestyle options within a two-hour drive.

The Safety Reality

Safety tops concerns for Americans considering Latin American investment. Ashley's experience contradicts common fears.

"I go out in the mornings while Steve's still sleeping, running. I'll run all the way from Old Town to Punta Pacifica and back and never had any issues. I've never felt unsafe in any area of Panama we've been in."

She maintains awareness, as in any major city, but feels genuinely safe with reasonable precautions.

Shopping and Dining Excellence

Ashley worried about access to quality goods and restaurants. Panama exceeded expectations.

Multiplaza features Carolina Herrera and international designers matching upscale US malls. Albrook Mall offers hundreds of stores at affordable prices. Boutiques throughout Casco Viejo provide unique, high-quality goods.

Dining ranges from $5 local fondas to $60 fine dining. "I remember having a French course meal, all in for 40 bucks for Steve and I. In Nashville, 40 bucks doesn't even get you lunch at a barbecue restaurant."

Advice for Women Investors

Ashley has met multiple women who invested in Panama independently.

"Women are investing in real estate on their own more and more, which I love. I certainly hope to empower other women to do that and give them confidence."

Why Panama works well for women specifically:

  • Women are respected in Panama's business environment

  • Lower crime rates in expat areas create comfortable independence

  • Strong female expat community provides support networks

  • English-speaking female professionals throughout service providers

The Investment Strategy

Ashley and Steve chose two distinct investments: early-stage beach development at Chame/Playa Caracol for appreciation, and Panama City convention center area for immediate rental income.

This combination balances cash flow with growth potential while providing personal use options.

What She Wishes People Understood

"We're not looking to abandon the US. We're looking to diversify and have options."

Healthcare infrastructure isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. Daily life quality exceeds expectations. Cultural integration takes time but enriches the experience.

The CHORD Approach

"We are willing and able to fly down with our clients and spend time there, helping them make decisions just as we would here in Nashville."
