Artist Spotlight – Patrick Darrah

Originally from Bloomingdale, New York, he moved to Nashville just over 3 years ago to pursue his dream of becoming a country star. Get to know him and what makes him unique in the sea of artists that flood to Nashville every day.
Why country music?
I listened to country music growing up. I worked in my dad's auto body repair shop where the voices of Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, George Strait, and Gary Allen rang in songs like “Long Haired Country Boy”. “Can't You See”, and “Blue Clear Sky”. Country music speaks to the listener and that's what I want to do with my music. A well-written country song speaks to emotion and is easily relatable. Country Music canvasses all kinds of emotions–from kicking up your heels, letting loose to celebrate a Friday night to a painful heartbreak where tears that fall like a pouring down rain. I want to create an emotional movement or take the listener “somewhere”; country music can do that.
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included), which two people should sing the ultimate country duet?
While they've performed together at various award shows and events, I think George Strait and Garth are a magnetic combination. They're two living legends and trendsetters in the country music format, and the two very different characters, persona and musical styles contrast nicely for the ultimate country duet.
What song you ever recorded means the most to you and why?
“Mama Left The Radio On” (from my new debut CD–NORTHERN TRUTH), means a whole lot to me; it's my personal homage to my mom. The “radio” represents familiarity and comfort, and the care of a parent. We all remember what made us feel secure as a child and, in this instance, “Mama Left The Radio On.”
Who would you like to write a song for you?
I'd like to write with or record a song written by Jon Pardi. Jon's writing technique is unique in that he puts a cool twist on country tradition; he's “new school” – pushing the limits with a vibey groove – wide open, heading smack down the country lane. (If you've not already, check out “Heartache On The Dance Floor” and you'll hear exactly what I mean!)
What is the one thing that readers/fans would be surprised to know about you?
Now that fans have heard my music and learned about my influences, and writing style, most would probably be surprised to learn that I had my own punk rock band in my teenage years. Yes, indeed, folks; we were the “HPPF.” (…and no, I cannot tell you what the initials stand for…it would be inappropriate!)
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any “rituals” to calm your nerves?
I really don't get too nervous before a show; but 2 Jack Fires, a Bud Light and a prayer each time do help.
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why?
I'll never forget when I saw my album (NORTHERN TRUTH) for the first time on the iTunes Hot New Country List! Next up…the Opry!
